2001: an LA odyssey

ARLIS/NA 29th Annual Conference
Thursday March 29 to Wednesday April 4, 2001

So you are renting a car to zip around California after the conference? How long does it take to get places, you ask -- see the following maps:

Some driving tips (in no particular order):

  1. All distances are given in terms of driving time, not mileage, because the number of miles driven is not proportionate to time. Traffic in LA is usually awful, but sometimes it will surprise you.
  2. When traffic isn't awful, Southern Californians will speed. I've made it from San Diego to mid-LA from 1.75- 3 hours depending on traffic conditions and how many CHiPs were out.
  3. If you do not want to speed, please stay in the right side lanes. Those of us who do speed will thank you.
  4. Be careful: drivers tend not to signal. Think of NYC cab drivers going 80 miles an hour pulling in and out of spaces a bike might fit in.
  5. Left hand turns in LA are tricky. For some reason while they do have left turn lanes, they don't have left turn signals. What drivers do is pull out into the intersection and wait till the light turns red. This also means you should be careful when starting up from a red light.
  6. Get a good map -- don't rely on the ones the car rental places give out. On and off ramps at the same place may have different names. Freeways change name depending on what direction you are going in.
  7. California has many miles of car pool lanes now. A car pool is defined as two or more people. Being pregant doesn't count, nor do blow-up companions.
  8. Believe it or not, it's worth it. There are many wonderful places to get to out here, and while they are possible to do on public transportation, they are not practical.
