Jeffrey Chusid: "Reading the Documents of Southern California Modernism"

Historic sites are the richest of documents, with narratives that re-present the social, political, economic, technological, environmental and aesthetic situations and aspirations of a place and culture(s).  This talk will briefly examine several notable buildings of Southern California Modernism and propose some of the ways in which these stories can be read.

Lionel March "Archival Evidence and Recent Restorations: The Case of R.M. Schindler"

Rudolph Schindler (1887-1953) built many residences in the Los Angeles area from 1922 until his death. Over time, some of these houses have fallen into disrepair, have been altered, or have suffered earthquake damage. The restoration of these architecturally significant works has been aided by archival materials held in the library of the University of California Santa Barbara. The talk will described restorations of the How, the Walker and the Yates residences among others undertaken by the architect/builder, Jeff Fink, over the past decade.
