Basic Guidelines to Student Employment in the UCSD Libraries

All available student reserved positions are posted in the window outside the Personnel office in the Geisel Library. Due to the freqeucy of posting and high number of applicants, these positions are not posted on the Library Web Page. However, all the open student jobs are posted up to the minute on line at the Port Triton http://career.ucsd.edu/ . You will need to visit the Career Services Center to register as a user.

Applications for the open student jobs in the Libraries are located on the door outside the Geisel Library. Be sure to write down the job number and follow the posted How to Apply instructions.

A student position can be valuable to your career for many reasons:

Spending time with the Career Services Center can give you an edge over standard Job Fairs since Career Services has found employers who are eager to hire UC Graduates.

Here's a testimonial from Cameron Cavette, Class of 2004:

"Being an active student and taking advantage of all the opportunities offered at UCSD was/is very important to me. The problem was that I needed to work in order to help pay for my tuition, books, and that rather expensive parking permits. So to kill two birds with one stone I found an on-campus job through Career Services.

"Working on campus allowed me to be actively involved at UCSD and the bi-weekly paycheck was definitely an added bonus. My supervisors always made it clear that my academics came first and were flexible around my exams and classes; after all this is a college campus and I wouldn't be here in the first place if it weren't for school. Working only ten hours a week allowed me to remain focused on my studies and I could always pick up more hours during the winter and summer breaks if I remained in San Diego.

"I've learned so many practical skills that I know I'll apply when I enter the corporate world; time management and multi-tasking come easily to me now. Little did I know that this part-time office job would be a stepping-stone to securing the job of my dreams after graduation.

"With three years of office experience and an established record of student leadership, I went into my interviews confident in my abilities for the open positions. I landed a job with the Boeing Company in their Business Career Foundation Program and am glad to finally have an answer to the 'so what are you doing after graduation' question!"
