Basic Steps for Hiring Students
Once a candidate is selected:
- The department or hiring supervisor sends a request to post a job to the Student Employment Office in LHR.
- The Student Employment Office sends a copy to the hiring person for review, or we assist with the development of a new position.
- The job is posted on Port Triton and in the window of the Student Employment Office. A formatted copy with the job # number is emailed to the hiring person.
- The department pre-screens applicants via telephone or the initial application available outside the Student Employment Office, and invites candidates to interview.
- The department develops interview questions relative to the job qualifications, specialties of the area, departmental needs and requirements. (**Special needs and requirements should be included in the job posting.)
The resignation process:
- Email the (job posting number, student’s name, and A number) to the Student Employment Office: vursiullo@ucsd.edu or sponce@ucsd.edu (preferably both.) Simultaneously instruct the student to call the office to schedule an appointment for completion of new hire paperwork and to receive an orientation to the Library.
- Topics covered during orientation: Computer Use, Care of the Collections, Food & Drink and Conduct Policies, Emergency Preparedness Plan, Time and Money Questions, and the Payroll Calendar. Also, a copy of the candidate’s job card is provided. Once this process is complete the employee is released to the department to begin work.
The student must fill out a Resignation Form: (Libnet- LHR- Student Supervisor Area.) The original Resignation Form, along with the last PTR, is sent to Vinny in LHR. Resignation forms are due to LHR on the last day worked with any pay due attached (this is to ensure that the student is paid out correctly and does not stay active on our Payroll.)
