CHARGE

Develop, implement, recommend and coordinate UCSD Libraries user instruction and outreach policies, programs, projects, facilities, tools and budgets.

Advocate for UCSD and UC-wide support of library instruction activities and initiatives. Serve as contact point for UC-level library instruction activities and initiatives.

Improve library instruction and outreach programs by coordinating and implementing changes, based on user need.

Partner with Library Human Resources Department to provide instructional improvement training and collaboration opportunities for UCSD Libraries staff responsible for user education. Collect and disseminate information about emerging trends and initiatives in library instruction and outreach.

MEMBERSHIP

PSAC Chair appoints the chair of the IOC to a two-year term. Members include library staff who are interested in working to further the instruction and outreach efforts of the UCSD Libraries. The membership should include at least one representative from each unit that is directly engaged in instruction and outreach functions. Each unit (see list below) has a representative member on the committee.

  • IR/PS Library
  • SSH Library
  • S&E Library
  • SIO Library
  • Special Collections

One IOC member who also is a member of the Information Services Committee (ISC) shall serve as the ISC representative and report on that committee's activities. Meetings are open, and guest participants or observers are welcome from all departments. The IOC mailing list is intended primarily for the working membership. Meeting minutes are posted on Libnet, and distributed to PSAC, LMG, the Sciences Cluster, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Cluster. The Reference Forum mailing list will be used to disseminate information to a broader audience.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Chair:

  • Represent the interests and needs of their departments
  • Call and conduct meetings
  • Develop agenda with input from members
  • Assure that the needs of all units are represented
  • Keep members informed of relevant activities and information
  • Form task groups and make implementation assignments
  • Provide regular reports to PSAC on instructional activities
  • Work closely with PSAC to coordinate activities with other instructional units and to identify items with policy implications
  • Distribute agendas, minutes and reports to PSAC, AULs, and Department Heads
  • Updates IOC mailing list
  • Posts minutes to Libnet
  • Submits budgets according to library-wide budgetary cycles

Representative Members:

  • Represent the interests and needs of their departments
  • Identify problems or issues for discussion
  • Inform the group of relevant activities within their departments (Unit heads are responsible for informing their Department Heads as well as their units)
  • Attend meetings
