Special Events

Prepare to experience three fantastic nights of San Diego scenery, culinary treats, and Southern California style entertainment.

The Thursday evening event is set amid the dazzling display of marine life at the world renowned Birch Aquarium. Enjoy a spectacular ocean view during the cocktail buffet and afterwards take a tour of the facilities where you can "experience thousands of sea creatures in 34 special exhibits, including a two-story kelp-forest tank containing fishes and giant marine plants." The museum and bookstore will be open for your enjoyment.

On Friday night you will be on your own. Close by campus is La Jolla. Take a city bus to walk the shore, visit shops and have dinner. Or you could stay on campus. While on campus, consider the nationally famous La Jolla Playhouse. For current information , please check their website http://www.lajollaplayhouse.com. Spend the evening in the Gaslamp Quarter National Historic District. This is recognized as the historic heart of San Diego. Art galleries, fine restaurants, coffeehouses, microbreweries, jazz clubs and specialty shops occupy the area. On the edge of the Gaslamp is Horton Plaza, a shopping center unique in design and decoration. In the same area is Seaport Village, a re-creation of a 19th century wharf. It offers shops, restaurants, and benches for people and harbor watching. A 10-15 minute walk will take you to the harbor where you will find seafood restaurants, the San Diego Maritime Museum, and the ferry which will take you across the harbor to Coronado Landing for more shops and restaurants. Or gamble, eat, and shop at Viejas Casino & Turf Club in Alpine. Friday night is a big bingo night but the casino is open for all regular gambling. Eat in the restaurant or visit the Dream Catcher Lounge for live entertainment. The Outlet Shopping Center also has a drama Legend of the Night Fires at 9:00 pm, lasting about 30 minutes.

Walk on the wild side Saturday evening when we visit the famous San Diego Zoo. Enjoy dinner and an entertaining animal presentation before being let loose to roam the grounds at your own pace. The park will remain open until 10 p.m. for your enjoyment.

And the excitement doesn't stop here--Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights the Gameroom at the Price Center on campus will be open for the infamous Late Night Socials. Be sure to stop by and socialize with your colleagues. Play pool and arcade games, or if you prefer, just relax in the Library Lounge. Light snacks will be served in addition to a cash bar serving premium beers, wines, and soft drinks. We are working on securing a DJ to play '60's, and '70's music for your enjoyment.

Welcome Refreshments

Light refreshments will be served on Thursday, June 22, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Theater Lobby and Price Center Courtyard. All conference registrants are welcome to come and relax and greet old and new friends.

First Timers' and Mentor Program Reception

A gathering for all first-time NASIG attendees and Mentor Program participants is scheduled for Thursday, June 22, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Price Center Ballroom A. This reception is a wonderful chance for first-time conference attendees to meet NASIG officers, board members, committee chairs and other first timers in a relaxed and informal setting.

NASIG's Continuing Education Committee is sponsoring a Mentoring Program at the conference to help new attendees feel more at ease, to highlight membership benefits and to help create new networking opportunities. The program will match experienced NASIG conference goers with new NASIG attendees. For further information and an application form, please see the March 2000 issue of the NASIG Newsletter or NASIGWeb.
